The Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta is set to once again glide through the waters of Barcelona from July 14 to 17 of this year, after the cancellation of the 2020 edition due to the restrictions imposed to tackle the pandemic.

Following a tradition that began in 2008, the classic sailing elite will meet again to show off the beauty and elegance of these boats in Barcelona, the only international city to host an event of these special characteristics.

This demonstrates the Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta’s support for Barcelona, in the hope that it can continue to be part of the city’s annual calendar of glamorous events. Therefore, on Thursday, July 15, at the Barcelona Royal Yacht Club, a select group of more than 25 grand jewels of naval history will once again cast off and with their sails unfurled, sparkle along the coast of Barcelona, its ports and beaches until Saturday.

A VISUAL SPECTACLE WITH THE STRICTEST SAFETY MEASURES

The Barcelona Royal Yacht Club, Barceloneta beach, Port Olímpic and Port Vell are just some of the exceptional viewpoints from where thousands of residents and visitors to Barcelona have been able to enjoy this spectacle up close, since the first edition in 2008.

On this occasion, in accordance with the health protocols and instructions of the authorities, the organizers have decided to limit the event to just the races out at sea, with the hope that the different social activities held in the regatta village located in the Barcelona Royal Yacht Club can be resumed in 2022.

This true “floating museum in competition”, the most important classic boat regatta on the Spanish sailing scene, is a sporting event that, in addition to its deep-seated sailing roots, promotes a unique message of environmental respect and sustainability. Only a regatta for classic sailboats, vessels adapted to strict regulations of traditional construction materials (wood, bronze, cotton, hemp, etc.,) and governed by the wind, can boast such a minimal environmental impact.

200 SAILORS AND MORE THAN 25 ELITE BOATS

The year of the regatta’s rebirth will have a proven competitive level with the participation of different winners from previous editions such as the Alba, Yanira, Marigan, Malabar X and Marigold and the involvement of Spanish, Italian, British, German crews and even a Uruguayan boat.

Under the restrictions established by the authorities, around 200 top-level international sailors are expected to compete in the different categories in more than 25 boats, with the same spirit as in previous editions: passion, teamwork, commitment, enthusiasm and respect for the environment.

After the day for registrations on Wednesday, July 14, the different races will take place at 1:00 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday, under the World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024 and the International Mediterranean Committee (IMC) Regulations governing measurement, and classic and vintage boat regattas.

In the coming days, users will be able to follow the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona Regatta on social media through impressive images of the event.
