- From the 15th to the 18th of July, boats from all over the world will dock in the Catalan capital to participate in the VII edition of the Barcelona Puig Vela Clàssica regatta
- Up to fifty sea legends from Argentina, Italy, France, Ireland, England or Spain will deploy their sails in a display of beauty and sophistication
- Barcelona citizens and all who are in the city these days will be able to admire from the shore a big procession with the best classic Mediterranean boats
Barcelona, 7th July 2015. Barcelona will host for the eighth consecutive year one of the most relevant sports, cultural and social event the city enjoys: the Barcelona Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta. This is one of the most important classical regattas of the Mediterranean, a party bringing together the international elite of classic sailing between the 15th and the 18th of July at the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona.
The best classic boats from France, Italy, England or Spain will sail to Barcelona to participate in this traditional competition. Beauties like Manitou or Islander –with almost one hundred years of history on their deck– next to Moonbeam III or Marigold are the best examples of the importance of this regatta that, year after year, is gaining prominence.
During these four days, the whole city will witness a unique spectacle that can be viewed from different locations like Port Vell, Barceloneta or Port Olímpic and from the highest points of the city. In addition, those who have a boat or decide to rent one will have the luxury of enjoying the regatta from the sea.
The classic navigation is, above all, passion for beauty, style and elegance. Nothing better can convey these feelings to a regatta of vintage boats. Elements like wood, bronzes, or sails seem to come from an old picture where sophistication and good taste prevail.
“With the Barcelona Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta we confirm year after year Puig commitment to the city and to the world of sailing. This event is an ideal way to show the international projection of Barcelona and our company through a unique show time”, said Marc Puig, president of Puig, the company that has been organizing the regatta together with the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona from 2008.
An exclusive show for the enjoyment of Barcelona citizhens and tourists
The eighth edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona is one of the few opportunities available to see in action “historical and cultural” boats that are usually accessible only to a privileged few. This regatta is not only meant for the owners, masters and crew, but above all, for the enjoyment of Barcelona citizens and tourists as an outdoors floating museum.
In its commitment to Barcelona, Puig has chosen to provide its citizens and visitors an event that integrates both sporting competition and the realization of the long historical, cultural and social history of the world of navigation with this Mediterranean capital. Therefore, it is a unique opportunity for the whole city to get delighted in a show that is usually available to very few.
There is no other capital in the world hosting a classic sailboats regatta like the Barcelona does every year. From that first line of dreamt destinations –where classic sailing events such as Cannes, Antibes, Antigua, Newport and Wight Island, are held– only one of them is of paramount importance and international significance: Barcelona.
A competition steeped in history
The VIII edition of the Barcelona Puig Vela Clàssica regatta has become one of the main events of the classic sailing internationally, both for its participants and its unique atmosphere that annually gathers more unconditional fans among shipowners and the most expert fans.
Nearly fifty vintage and classic boats, from our country and other parts of the world (England, France, Argentina, Italy, etc.) will sail featuring a grand staging of pure seafaring tradition, which can rarely be enjoyed in big cities like Barcelona.
In this VIII Edition of the Regatta three different categories have been established according to the design, age and size of the participating boats:
- Vintage Boats: Boats made of wood or metal, launched before the 31st December 1949.
- Classic Boats: Built in wood or metal, in accordance with the original plans, and launched between the 1st of January 1950 and the 31st of December 1975.
- Big Boats: Vintage and Classic boats with lengths from 25 meters.
